Superman’s Godfather speaks…

Earlier this week the LA Times printed a lengthy, yet informative interview with director Christopher Nolan. The interview was regarding his upcoming film, Inception. This man hasn’t done an interview in quite some time and he has been pretty tight lipped about Batman 3. The only news we’ve had about Christopher or Batman 3 have all been internet rumor and fanboy speculation. The sad thing is he has never come out to confirm or deny the rumors that have built up over time which makes Batman talk difficult for fanboys like myself. Then the word came down that he would now be “godfathering” the next Superman movie and possibly the franchise. It was all I could do to keep my head from exploding. Thankfully the LA Times came in just in the nick of time and got some answers for all of us.

Here are a few excerpts from the article that give you some idea as to what we can expect regarding DC Comic’s posterboys:

Batman 3: The Conclusion

Jonathan Nolan is working on the script at present – “My brother is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out…he’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be.”

“Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story and in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story” says Nolan who won’t even hint at the villain beyond one possibility – “it won’t be Mr. Freeze”.

Nolan says he’s “very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters… viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling and it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories.”

Superman: The Man of Steel

Nolan told the LA Times that his involvement with the Superman franchise came about from them having reached an impasse on what to do with their third Batman film and David Goyer having an idea of what could be done with the Man of Steel:

“He basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman. I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.

“A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do.”

Also as far as Nolan is concerned his Batman & Superman exist in two different worlds, so those of you hoping for crossovers are gonna have to keep on dreaming:

“Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other.”

I have to admit I’m disappointed that he feels both have to exist in different, or their own worlds/ universes but I can understand his logic. It’s the way HE sees these characters and these worlds that enables him to give us these realistic, well thought out, character rich movies. You put that together with Goyer’s writing and what they can accomplish can be epic. Imagine a Superman movie on the level that The Dark Knight was. I think I just jizzed in my pants.
