Halloween

The Shape and Me
(Or how I learned to love/fear Michael Myers)

John Carpenter’s
Halloween
1978

Ok since were starting off my review column with such a grand film as Halloween by John Carpenter, I think it best to give you a basic idea of what this film went threw.

The film was shot in and around the southern California areas of, South Pasadena, West Hollywood, and more close to home, City of Industry. The film itself only cost two hundred thousand dollars to make with a shooting schedule of only either twenty seven or thirty six days (sorry its 3am and I haven’t slept so forgive me if the shooting days are wrong). This film is also Jamie lee Curtis’s first major acting role. Now that you have a basic idea of what the filming schedule was like let’s review this bad boy!

From the first moments of the film you get the sense something’s not right. We have all had that feeling of being watched, but this movie takes the cake! The camera angels used are so revolutionary they constantly surprise me even to this day. Yet they lack planning in the long run due to lack of space in the filming location. I love the little kid in the beginning of the film who plays the murderous Mike Myers (the little peeping tom!!!) All he does is stand there in a trance when confronted by his parents after he slaughters his sister. Don’t these parents know if you come home and find your kid outside with a damn butcher’s knife, to KEEP DRIVING!?!

Fast forward fifteen years and you come to an escaped Michael Myers all grown up and ready for blood. Again the cinematography is fabulous!!! In its simplicity and subtle way it drags you into the life of one Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). She’s your typical high school girl with a bit of a nerdy side…ok I’m being polite, she’s a dweeb and easily a case study for virgin girls everywhere.

So after this intro into the world of Haddonfield (Mike Myers hometown) the kills just keep on coming so let’s look at what I call the drive in totals.

  • 4 Dead bodies
  • 1 Dead dog
  • 6 shots fired
  • Knife stabbings
  • Girl choking (one with a phone chord)
  • Pumpkin smashing
  • Eye gouging
  • Neck stabbing

In all Halloween nails all the classic horror movie guidelines. The score by John Carpenter is feared even to this day. I can’t say how much I recommend this flick!

So if you’re looking for a good popcorn and cuddle movie this October get your mitts on John Carpenters, Halloween.

Next review will be on the much anticipated Halloween Horror nights at Universal Studios. I got a sneak peak a week early so i’m cool and your not!!

See you next time horror hounds
